Everest heroes honoured

Kathmandu, June 7: A number of mountaineers who set world records while scaling the Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, were honoured amidst a programme here Tuesday.

Temba Tsheri Sherpa (the youngest person to scale the Mt Everest at the age of 16), Phurba Tenjing Sherpa (most successful ascent to the Everest at the youngest age), Min Bahadur Sherchan (the oldest man to conquer the Everest at the age of 76), Chhurim Sherpa (female to climb the Everest twice in a single season), Appa Sherpa (most successful ascent to the Everest: 21 summits) , Pertemba Sherpa (summit of the Everest with 3 ridges), Ang Rita Sherpa (10 summits of the Everest without oxygen), Sano Babu Sunuwar (man to paraglide from the top of the Everest), Lakpa Doma Sherpa (most successful ascent to the Everest – 7 times-female) and Pemba Diki Sherpa (a member in the 7 Summit Women Expedition) were among those 32 mountaineering heroes feted on the occasion.

On the occasion, pieces of rocks brought from the top of the world by noted mountaineer Phurba, who on May 19 reached atop the Everest with a flag of ‘We Will Rise Foundation’, were presented to the heads-of-the-states of China and France through their representatives of the respective embassies here.

Rocks from the top of the world will also be presented to the United Nations and its five standing committee members—the United States of America, China, the United Kingdom, France and Russia, to draw their attention towards increasing global warming, a result of massive carbon emission, and its effects including snow melting on the mountains, it was shared at the programme .

Minister for Youth and Sports Satya Narayan Mandal was the chief guest of the programme organised by the ‘ We Will Rise Foundation’ and supported by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, Nepal Tourism Board and Hotel Soaltee Crown Plaza . RSS
